handmade vase. This unique handmade vase is carved with multi coloured glaze effect is made by hand from start to finish. It’s extremely labour intensive and takes several days to make. I start by throwing the base on the wheel. Once hard enough I turn it over and trim the base itself. It is then taken off the wheel and coils of clay are built up over several days to form the shape. I start carving the pot when it is leather hard. This pot has taken many hours to carve by hand with large swirls.
Once dry it is fired twice. First to 1000 deg C. This process takes upto 24hrs including cool down period. The final firing is when I apply the glaze, which in this case is 4 colours hand painted on the outside in several layers of each to get the multi-tone effect. The outside is first painted with 3 layers of black glaze, then the others colours, blue, green and purple are painted in several layers. Inside is a dark blue. Each layer has to dry before I can apply the next one.
Every piece is unique and the result is never certain until after it’s had its 2nd firing. It then gets its 2nd firing to 1240 deg C making it extremely tough and waterproof. After approx 24 hrs I get to open the kiln and see the results.
